Police Technology glossary
Policing is a very large subject, and people tend not to know the meaning of certain words or mistake them. So here is a glossary of words that are commonly used in that field.
- alibi
- noun
- A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act, typically a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place.
- Example: Quickly ticked off the list of suspects when her ALIBI proves convincing to the police.

- verb
- Seize (someone) by legal authority and take into custody.
- Example: Police still possess considerable discretion to ARREST and detain and are required to report to pr law.

- noun
- A distinctive emblem worn as a mark of office, membership, achievement, licensed employment, etc.
- Example: The badge is a black and gold imperial eagle surmounted by the imperial crown.

- bulletproof vest
- noun
- Is an item of body armor that helps absorb the impact and reduce or stop penetration to the torso from firearm-fired projectiles and fragmentation from explosions.
- Example: They were armed and one was wearing a bulletproof vest.

- noun
- A tribunal presided over by a judge, judges, or a magistrate in civil and criminal cases.
- Example: The court ruled the law unconstitutional.

- noun
- The place where an offense has been committed and forensic evidence may be gathered.
- Example: Her ultimate goal is to become a crime scene investigator, but for now, Cooper works as a road patrol office.

- criminal code
- noun
- The Criminal Code is a federal law that includes definitions of most of the criminal offenses that the Parliament of Canada has enacted.
- Example: The criminal code includes crimes of homicide.

- detective
- noun
- A person, especially a police officer, whose occupation is to investigate and solve crimes.
- Example: The police detective helped us by perjuring himself.

- noun
- A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.
- Example: The kidnapper was the child's mother, a drug addict, who no longer had custody and tried to spirit her daughter away.

- noun
- A document or other object produced in a court as evidence.
- Example: There's a room of exhibits at the police station, where you can find all of the evidence.

- noun
- A sum of money exacted as a penalty by a court of law or other authority.
- Example: The police officer gave her a fine because she was speeding on the freeway.

- noun
- A rifle, pistol, or other portable gun.
- Example: While in custody, he was further charged with possession of ecstasy and possession of a firearm.

- noun
- A pair of lockable linked metal rings for securing a prisoner's wrists.
- Example: The handcuffs never hurt, right?

- noun
- A person confined to an institution such as a prison or hospital.
- Example: The more negative inmate behavior becomes, the more extreme the coercive control will become.

- noun
- A place for the confinement of people accused or convicted of a crime.
- Example: He was killed by a mob in jail at Carthage, Illinois, on the 27th of June 1844.

- motive
- noun
- A reason for doing something, especially one that is hidden or not obvious.
- Example: ''He said he wanted to get revenge, and he killed her. That was his motif'' said the cop after arresting him.

- The unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another.
- Example: One of them might have even been responsible for Annie's murder.

- robbery
- noun
- The action of taking property unlawfully from a person or place by force or threat of force.
- Example: A jury found Simpson guilty on all charges in the robbery, and he was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

- noun
- The distinctive clothing worn by members of the same organization or body or by children attending certain schools.
- Example: Lana rushed to him, horrified by the amount of blood soaking his uniform.

- noun
- A person who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place.
- Example: Léa was brought in to be questioned because she was a witness to the crime William committed.
