Police Technology glossary

Policing is a very large subject, and people tend not to know the meaning of certain words or mistake them. So here is a glossary of words that are commonly used in that field.

alibi
noun
A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act, typically a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place.
Example: Quickly ticked off the list of suspects when her ALIBI proves convincing to the police.

verb
Seize (someone) by legal authority and take into custody.
Example: Police still possess considerable discretion to ARREST and detain and are required to report to pr law.

badge
noun
A distinctive emblem worn as a mark of office, membership, achievement, licensed employment, etc.
Example: The badge is a black and gold imperial eagle surmounted by the imperial crown.

bulletproof vest
noun
Is an item of body armor that helps absorb the impact and reduce or stop penetration to the torso from firearm-fired projectiles and fragmentation from explosions.
Example: They were armed and one was wearing a bulletproof vest.

A tribunal presided over by a judge, judges, or a magistrate in civil and criminal cases.
Example: The court ruled the law unconstitutional.

The Criminal Code is a federal law that includes definitions of most of the criminal offenses that the Parliament of Canada has enacted.

A person, especially a police officer, whose occupation is to investigate and solve crimes.
Example: The police detective helped us by perjuring himself.

drug
noun
A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.
Example: The kidnapper was the child's mother, a drug addict, who no longer had custody and tried to spirit her daughter away.

Example: There's a room of exhibits at the police station, where you can find all of the evidence.

A sum of money exacted as a penalty by a court of law or other authority.
Example: The police officer gave her a fine because she was speeding on the freeway.

A rifle, pistol, or other portable gun.

A person confined to an institution such as a prison or hospital.

A reason for doing something, especially one that is hidden or not obvious.
Example: ''He said he wanted to get revenge, and he killed her. That was his motif'' said the cop after arresting him.
